The 15 October UCAS Deadline 2026: What Is Actually Due for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Vet

Every year a handful of strong applicants miss the 15 October deadline without ever having been late with their own work. They finished the personal statement, filled in the form, pressed send, and then the application sat in a queue at school while a reference was finished. At 18:00 on 15 October that counts as missed.

This guide is about avoiding exactly that. It covers who the deadline applies to, what "submitted" really means, the rules that only apply to these courses, and the dates that keep coming after 15 October, because for Oxford and Cambridge applicants the deadline is the start of the process, not the end.

Who the 15 October deadline applies to

UCAS describes 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time as the equal consideration date for applications to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and for most courses in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine/science. In practice:

• Oxford and Cambridge: every course, no exceptions for subject. Mature applicants to Cambridge's mature colleges and applicants to Oxford's Astrophoria Foundation Year work to a January deadline instead.
• Medicine: most standard five and six-year courses. Some foundation, gateway and graduate-entry courses have their own dates, so check each one in the UCAS search tool rather than assuming.
• Dentistry and veterinary medicine or veterinary science: again, most courses.

If just one of your five choices is on that list, the application carrying it has to reach UCAS by 15 October. Everything else can wait until the main deadline, which is 18:00 on Wednesday 13 January 2027.

What "submitted" actually means

This is the part that catches people out. UCAS is explicit that sending your application to your school before the deadline does not count: it has to be received by UCAS. If you apply through a school or college, the order of events is:

1. You complete every section and send the application to your school.
2. Your school checks it, may send it back for corrections, and adds your reference and predicted grades.
3. Your school sends it to UCAS.

UCAS will not accept an application without a reference, and Oxford says plainly that an application without one is incomplete and cannot be considered. References take teachers time, and every Oxbridge and medicine applicant in the school is asking at the same moment.

That is why almost every school sets an internal deadline a week or more before 15 October. Treat that date as your real deadline. If you do not know it, ask your head of sixth form this week.

What has to be finished

For the application that carries your 15 October choices, all of this must be complete:

The personal statement deserves a specific warning. You write one statement for all five choices, and it cannot be changed after you submit. If you plan to add non-medicine or non-Oxbridge choices in January, they will read the statement you send in October. The three questions and the 4,000-character limit are the same for everyone; there is no longer, separate version for Oxbridge.

The rules that only apply to these courses

Oxford or Cambridge, not both. Both universities say it in almost identical words: you cannot apply to Cambridge and Oxford in the same year. At Oxford you can also only apply for one course.

A maximum of four medicine, dentistry or vet choices. UCAS caps these subjects at four. Your fifth choice can be any other course, or left empty. Leaving it empty has one consequence people rarely notice: if you are unsuccessful at all four, UCAS says that because you have not used five choices, you cannot normally use Extra. So choose the fifth course as deliberately as the other four.

Admissions tests are booked separately. Nothing about UCAS registers you for a test. For 2027 entry Oxford and Cambridge use the UAT-UK tests (ESAT, TMUA and, at Oxford, TARA) for many courses, plus the UCAT for medicine and the LNAT for law. Booking for the October UAT-UK sitting closes at 18:00 on Monday 28 September 2026, and the UCAT testing window ends on 24 September. UCAT booking has already closed, but if your course needs a UAT-UK test and you have not booked it, do that before anything else in this guide.

The dates that come after 15 October

For Oxbridge applicants in particular, the deadline opens a sequence of further deadlines. Missing one of these can end an application just as surely.

Medicine, dentistry and vet schools run their own interview and offer timelines, usually from November to March. Each school publishes its own dates.

How hard is the deadline, really?

Harder than most. UCAS itself will still pass a late application to a university if the course has places, but it will not be guaranteed equal consideration, and for these courses that effectively means it will not be considered. Oxford describes its deadline as one that "must be strictly adhered to". Christ's College, Cambridge is even more direct: it cannot consider an application received after the deadline "under any circumstances", not even one a few seconds late.

Using the last two weeks well

With a fortnight to go, most statements do not need rewriting. They need specific things done to them:

• Swap claims for evidence. "I am fascinated by immunology" does nothing; one sentence on what you read about T-cell exhaustion and what it made you question does a great deal. Oxford's own guidance says there is no "special secret formula": tutors want to see real engagement with the subject.
• Reflect, do not list. For medicine in particular, what you learned from work experience matters far more than how many weeks you did.
• Balance the three answers. A common late-stage problem is a long first answer that leaves the third squeezed near its 350-character minimum.
• Get an outside read. Someone who has not seen the drafts will notice what you no longer can.
