✦ Quick answer

If you miss your firm offer, do not decline anything in a panic. First check UCAS Hub: your firm may still accept you if you were close, or offer you a related course. If not, and you met your insurance's conditions, you go there. If you missed both, you are in Clearing and can call universities with your results that day. If a grade looks wrong, ask your school for a priority review of marking and tell the university so it can hold your place. Adjustment no longer exists. For 2027 entry, A-level results day is 12 August 2027.

Results day rarely goes exactly to plan for everyone, and missing an offer is far more common than it feels at 8am. The order in which you do things matters. Here is what to check, what each outcome means, and what to do next, for 2027 entry (A-level results day: Thursday 12 August 2027).

Step 1: check UCAS Hub before you do anything else

Exam boards send results to universities before you get them, so by the time you log in, most decisions have been made. UCAS statuses usually update between about 8am and 8.30am. UCAS shows your offer status, not your grades. Get the grades themselves from your school.

Do not decline or release anything yet. Most of the options below disappear if you act on the first emotion.

Step 2: find your situation

You missed your firm, but only just

Your firm choice may still confirm your place. Universities often accept near misses when they have room, and they look at the whole application, not just one grade. If UCAS still shows the offer as pending, the university is probably still deciding.

Phone the admissions office. Have your UCAS ID and grades ready, be polite, and ask whether they are still considering you. Mention anything relevant they might not know, such as illness during exams that your school reported as special consideration.

Your firm offered you a different course

This is a changed course offer: a related course, sometimes with a foundation year, offered instead of the original. It appears in UCAS Hub, and you can accept or decline it. Look properly at the course before you answer, and check the deadline shown.

You missed your firm but met your insurance

You are placed at your insurance choice. You do not need to do anything for this to happen. If you are unsure you want to go, talk to someone before releasing yourself into Clearing, because that gives up the place.

You missed both

You are in Clearing, which has been open since 2 July 2027. This is where many students find excellent places:

  1. Make a shortlist of courses you would actually want, from the UCAS Clearing search and university websites.
  2. Phone universities with your UCAS ID and grades. Lines are busiest in the morning, so keep working down the list.
  3. Get informal offers, then add your chosen Clearing choice in UCAS Hub only when the university tells you to.
  4. Check Clearing Plus, where UCAS suggests matched courses that may want to hear from you.

Step 3: if a grade looks wrong, act today

Your school can request a review of marking from the exam board. If a university place depends on it, ask for a priority review, which has an earlier deadline and a faster turnaround. You cannot request it yourself; it goes through your exams officer.

Then tell the university the review is underway. Many will hold your place while it happens, though they do not have to. Be realistic: grades can go up, stay the same, or go down.

If you did better than expected

Adjustment no longer exists: UCAS withdrew it after the 2021 cycle. The only way to move to a different course is to release yourself from your firm place into Clearing. That cancels the place immediately and permanently, with no guarantee of anything better. Speak to the university you want first, and only release yourself once you are certain.

If nothing feels right this year

Accepting a place you would not have chosen, just to have one, is the decision most students regret. A year out, possibly resitting one subject, and reapplying with your grades in hand is a strong plan: you apply knowing exactly what you have, often to unconditional offers. See reapplying to university and applying without predicted grades.

What not to do

  • Release yourself into Clearing before checking every option.
  • Accept the first Clearing offer for a course you have not looked at.
  • Ignore your phone and email that day: universities may contact you.
  • Assume one missed grade means rejection. It often does not.

Frequently asked questions

Will my firm choice still accept me if I miss by one grade?

Sometimes. Universities often confirm near misses when they have places, especially if the rest of your application was strong. UCAS Hub will show the decision. If it still shows your offer as pending, the university may be deciding: phone the admissions office with your UCAS ID ready.

What is a changed course offer?

An offer from your firm or insurance for a different but related course, sometimes a foundation year, made when you missed the original conditions. It appears in UCAS Hub and you choose whether to accept or decline it, so check the deadline shown there.

Can I get a grade reviewed if I missed my offer?

Yes, through your school, not by yourself. Ask for a priority review of marking, which exists for students whose university place depends on the result and has an earlier deadline than the standard service. Tell the university it is underway so it can consider holding your place.

What happened to UCAS Adjustment?

It no longer exists: UCAS withdrew it after the 2021 cycle. If you did better than expected and want to look elsewhere, you would have to release yourself from your firm place into Clearing, which gives that place up with no guarantee of something better.

Should I go through Clearing or reapply next year?

It depends on whether a course you would genuinely want is available now. Clearing can be excellent, but do not accept a place you would not have chosen. Taking a year, possibly resitting, and reapplying with grades in hand is a legitimate plan, not a failure.
