If you already have your results, you do not need predicted grades: you enter your achieved grades on UCAS and apply, usually as an independent applicant, with a reference from someone who knows you academically or professionally (not family or a friend). Achieved grades often lead to unconditional offers and make your chances clearer. If you are still studying outside a school, as a private candidate or home-educated student, you will usually need a tutor or teacher who knows your work to provide the predictions as part of the reference. For 2027 entry the main deadline is 18:00 on 13 January 2027.
Most UCAS advice assumes you are in Year 13 with a school entering predicted grades for you. Plenty of applicants are not: gap-year students with results in hand, people who left school a while ago, home-educated students and private candidates. Here is how applying works in each case for 2027 entry.
If you already have your results
This is the simplest case. You do not need predictions for qualifications you have finished: you enter your achieved grades in the education section of your UCAS application, exactly as they appear on your certificates.
Two things work in your favour:

Review my statement → From £7.49 · Results in under 10 min- Unconditional offers are common. If your grades already meet the course's requirements, a university can make an unconditional offer, because there is nothing left to wait for. See unconditional offers explained.
- Your position is clear. You can compare your grades directly with each course's typical offer rather than hoping a prediction holds.
There is a flip side. Achieved grades below the typical offer are final, and universities know they will not improve. Choose courses whose requirements your grades meet, and treat anything above them as ambitious. The free university chances calculator has an achieved-grades setting that weighs this properly: meeting the offer counts for more, and missing it counts much harder against you.
If you have left school or college
You can apply as an independent applicant, which is how most gap-year students, mature applicants and people in work apply. When you start your application, you say you are not applying through a school or college and go straight in.
You still need a reference, and it must come from someone who knows you academically or professionally. UCAS is clear that it cannot be a family member, friend, partner or ex-partner, and you cannot write it yourself. Good options:
- Your former school or college. Many will write for recent leavers, and they already know your work.
- A teacher or tutor who taught you regularly.
- An employer or manager, especially if you have been working for a while.
Your application cannot be sent until the reference is in, so ask early and give your referee time.

If you are home-educated or a private candidate
If you are still working towards your qualifications outside a school, the gap is the predictions themselves. Most degree applications need predicted grades for anything you have not finished, and those normally come from your referee.
- Ask a tutor who teaches you regularly to act as referee and provide the predictions, based on mock papers and your work.
- If you are sitting exams as a private candidate at an exam centre, ask early whether anyone there can support your application.
- Some universities publish their own guidance for home-educated applicants. Check your target courses, especially competitive ones with admissions tests or interviews.
If no one can credibly predict your grades, the cleanest route is often to sit the exams first and apply with your results the following cycle.
If your school predicts lower than you need
That is a different problem: you have predictions, just not the ones you hoped for. See predicted grades explained for how schools set them and what you can do.
Deadlines for 2027 entry
- 15 October 2026, 18:00: Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses (passed).
- 13 January 2027, 18:00: the equal-consideration deadline for most courses.
- 30 June 2027: the last date for main-scheme applications. Courses can fill after January, so earlier is better.
- 2 July 2027: Clearing opens, for anyone applying after 30 June or without offers.

Your statement matters more, not less
Without a current teacher championing you, your personal statement carries more of the application. Use your time out of education: work, reading, projects and responsibilities all belong in Question 3 if you say what they taught you about the subject. Frequently asked questions
Can I apply to university without predicted grades?
Yes, if you already hold your results: you enter your achieved grades on UCAS instead. If you are still studying, most degree applications need predicted grades, which your referee provides. Home-educated students and private candidates usually ask a tutor who knows their work.
Who can be my UCAS referee if I have left school?
Someone who knows you academically or professionally: a former teacher or school, a tutor who taught you regularly, or an employer. It cannot be a family member, friend, partner or ex-partner, and you cannot write it yourself. Many schools will still write references for former students, so ask yours first.
Are achieved grades better than predicted grades?
They are more certain. If your achieved grades meet the typical offer, universities often make unconditional offers, and you know exactly where you stand. If they fall short, that is final, so choose courses whose typical offers your grades actually meet.
Can I apply after results day?
Yes. Main-scheme applications for 2027 entry are accepted until 30 June 2027, though courses can fill after the 13 January 2027 equal-consideration deadline. After that, Clearing opens on 2 July 2027, and you can apply through Clearing with your results.
