Carnegie Mellon's Writing Supplement has three short answers of up to 300 words each: the passion or inspiration behind your intended area of study, how you will define a successful college experience, and anything you want to emphasize about your application.
CMU notes that you apply directly to a college or school within the university, so it encourages you to use part of your essays for your academic interests and goals; if you apply to more than one college, you should cover your multiple interests.

How to plan the Carnegie Mellon supplement
- 1Use the first answer for your academic story in the specific CMU college you apply to.
- 2Make the second answer about how you learn, not about grades or jobs.
- 3Save the third for the most important thing your application does not show yet.
1. The passion behind your area of study
Carnegie Mellon's wording · 300 words · Required“Most students choose their intended major or area of study based on a passion or inspiration that’s developed over time — what passion or inspiration led you to choose this area of study?”
What it is really asking. The passion or inspiration, developed over time, that led you to your area of study, at the CMU college or school you are applying to.
How to approach it
- 1Trace the interest over time: a start, a deepening, where it is now.
- 2Use a recent, specific example.
- 3If you apply to two CMU colleges, show how the interests connect.
Mistakes to avoid
- A single childhood moment as the whole story.
- Writing about a major CMU does not place you in.

2. A successful college experience
Carnegie Mellon's wording · 300 words · Required“Many students pursue college for a specific degree, career opportunity or personal goal. Whichever it may be, learning will be critical to achieve your ultimate goal. As you think ahead to the process of learning during your college years, how will you define a successful college experience?”
What it is really asking. How you will define a successful college experience, with learning at the center.
How to approach it
- 1Define success in your own terms.
- 2Show how you learn best, with an example.
- 3Say what that would look like at CMU.
Mistakes to avoid
- "A good job after graduation" as the definition.

3. What you want to emphasize
Carnegie Mellon's wording · 300 words · Required“Consider your application as a whole. What do you personally want to emphasize about your application for the admission committee’s consideration? Highlight something that’s important to you or something you haven’t had a chance to share. Tell us, don’t show us (no websites please).”
What it is really asking. Something important you want the committee to consider, or something you have not had a chance to share. CMU asks you to tell, not link (no websites).
How to approach it
- 1Check what is missing from your application.
- 2Choose one thing and give it a story.
Mistakes to avoid
- Repeating your best activity.
- Links or portfolios (CMU says no websites).

What our grader checks in your Carnegie Mellon answers
Every answer is judged against a checklist for its kind of question plus one check written for Carnegie Mellon's own wording. Each area comes back Met, Partly or Missing, and those verdicts (with the word limit) set the answer's readiness: Ready, Nearly there or Needs work. There is no score out of 100.
| Question | Carnegie Mellon's own check |
|---|---|
| The passion behind your area of study | Names the passion or inspiration behind the chosen area of study and how it developed over time; covers each college applied to if more than one. |
| A successful college experience | Defines a successful college experience in the applicant's own terms, tied to how they learn. |
