Vanderbilt asks one short answer of approximately 250 words, built on its motto Crescere aude, "dare to grow": how aspects of your identity, culture or background played a role in your personal growth, and how they will contribute to Vanderbilt's community.
One answer means one chance. It needs both halves: growth you can show, and a contribution you can picture on campus.

How to plan the Vanderbilt supplement
- 1Choose an aspect of identity, culture or background you have not centered in your Common App essay, or a different angle on the same one.
- 2Make the growth concrete: a before and an after you can show.
- 3Keep the last third for Vanderbilt: what classmates will meet in you.
1. Dare to grow: identity, culture or background
Vanderbilt's wording · 250 words · Required“Vanderbilt University’s motto, Crescere aude, is Latin for “dare to grow.” In your response, reflect on how one or more aspects of your identity, culture, or background has played a role in your personal growth, and how it will contribute to our campus community as you dare to grow at Vanderbilt.”
What it is really asking. How one or more aspects of your identity, culture or background played a role in your personal growth, and how that will contribute to Vanderbilt's community as you keep growing there.
How to approach it
- 1Name the aspect early and show it in one moment.
- 2Show the growth: what you used to think or do, and what changed.
- 3Use "dare to grow" as a lens, not a slogan: where did growing take nerve?
- 4End with how it shows up in a community: a role you would take, a conversation you would start.
Mistakes to avoid
- Describing identity with no growth.
- Repeating the motto without using it.
- Skipping the contribution half.
