Say more in 150 characters

Start with a verb

Led, built, taught, organized. Say what you did, not what the club does.

Add a real number

People, hours, events, money raised. Only numbers you could stand behind.

Drop the filler

Fragments and semicolons are fine. Articles and "I" usually are not needed.

Order by weight

Put first what took the most time, carried the most responsibility or matters most.

Before and afterBefore: “I am a member of the robotics club where we build robots for competitions and I help with programming.”
After: “Wrote autonomous navigation code; trained 6 new members in Python; team placed 3rd of 28 at state.”An invented example, to show the technique.

Questions

What are the Common App activities character limits?

Position or leadership description: 50 characters. Organization name: 100 characters. Description: 150 characters. Spaces and punctuation count.

How many activities can I list?

Up to 10. You do not have to fill all of them; fewer activities with real commitment read better than ten thin ones.
