AI and your essay

Can colleges tell if you used AI on your Common App essay?

Updated October 16, 2026

When you submit the Common App, you affirm that your essay is your own work, and Common App's fraud policy treats submitting the substantive content or output of an artificial intelligence tool as your own as fraud. So the first answer is simple: having AI write your essay breaks the rules you agree to.

The second answer is practical: even when it is not caught by software, AI-written prose tends to be noticed by readers, because it reads like everyone else's.

How colleges notice

Some colleges use AI-detection software. Every college has readers who have seen thousands of essays and notice the patterns: tidy paragraphs of the same length, polished sensory details that feel imagined rather than remembered, an epiphany that arrives right on time, and a lesson that could close anyone's essay. Model-written essays are fluent, but fluent and generic is exactly what readers skim past.

In our own testing, an independent AI detector flagged every one of 29 model-written essays we generated, including ones written with instructions to sound like a real teenager, while none of the 64 human-written essays colleges had published as examples were flagged.

What is fine to do

  • Brainstorm with friends, family, teachers or counselors.
  • Get feedback on a draft you wrote: what is unclear, what is missing, what is generic.
  • Fix spelling and grammar.
  • Ask questions that help you remember details or think harder about what an experience meant.

What crosses the line

  • Submitting sentences, paragraphs or a full essay that a tool wrote for you.
  • Pasting your draft into a tool and accepting its rewrite.
  • Running AI text through a "humanizer" to hide where it came from.

How Statementory fits

Our Common App review never writes or rewrites a single sentence of your essay. It scores the draft you wrote, points to the exact phrases that read as generic or template-like, and asks the questions only you can answer. Essays that an independent detector reads as machine-written cannot score highly, because readers react to them the same way.

Check your draft against all of this

A score out of 100, a note on every sentence, the paragraph costing you most and a 10-point draft check, in 5–10 minutes. We never write a word of your essay.
