What you actually did, and how your thinking changed because of it.

The common trap

Spending most of the essay on the hardship and one sentence on what it taught you.

What we score

Seven dimensions. Three matter most.

Grammar and structure refine an essay; they never rescue one that reveals nothing. So reflection, voice and character together outweigh the other four combined.

Reflection & Insight
How your thinking changed, not just what happened.
Heaviest
Voice & Authenticity
Whether it sounds like one particular person: you.
Heaviest
Character & Values
What a reader learns about who you are.
Heaviest
Specificity & Detail
Moments, names and objects, shown rather than told.
Refines
Structure & Flow
An opening you earn and an ending that lands.
Refines
Focus & Prompt Fit
One focused story, not a résumé in prose.
Refines
Craft & Mechanics
Clarity, concision, grammar and rhythm.
Refines
40–54
Early draft
A topic and some events; the lesson could be anyone's.
55–69
Developing
A real story; reflection stays on the surface. The most common first draft.
70–79
Solid
Specific and mostly in your voice; a reader remembers one clear thing.
80–89
Strong
Vivid throughout, with insight that feels earned and particular to you.
90+
Exceptional
Memorable and unmistakably yours. Rare.

Why no rewrites

Your essay has to be yours. So we coach. We never write.

Common App asks every applicant to affirm that their essay is their own work. A tool that hands you polished sentences puts that at risk, and it makes your essay sound like everyone else's.

Instead, your report quotes your own lines, explains exactly what is holding them back, and asks the questions only you can answer. The better version comes from you, in your voice.

“This is really an incredible tool”

It has significantly boosted my confidence when writing my personal statement. At first, I was very skeptical about what I actually wanted to write. But using this really helped me be sure of what I needed to write and where my strong areas for improvement are. It pushed my personal statement from a 58 to a 90 out of 100, which I am truly happy about.

“Useful Tool”

Fantastic insight into what I needed to do next in my personal statement. Really helped after I felt like I had hit a wall in my writing and had no idea where to go next. Would recommend.

Questions

Will Statementory rewrite my Common App essay?

No, never. Common App asks you to affirm your essay is your own work, so the report diagnoses and coaches instead: it comments on every sentence, asks the questions that get the better version out of you, and gives you a prioritized plan. Every sentence stays yours.

How is the essay scored?

Out of 100, across seven dimensions: reflection and insight, voice and authenticity, character and values, specificity, structure, focus and prompt fit, and craft. Reflection, voice and character carry the most weight, because they are what a reader learns about you that the rest of your application cannot show.

Does the score predict whether I will get in?

No. The essay is one part of an application, and colleges weigh grades, course rigor and much more. The score tells you how strong the essay is as writing and as a window into who you are, and what to fix first.

How long can my essay be?

The Common App personal essay must be between 250 and 650 words. You can submit a draft outside that range for review, and the report will tell you what to add or cut.

Can it review supplements or UC essays?

Right now the review is built for the Common App personal essay. You can check the length of UC Personal Insight answers and supplements with the free word counter.

What happens to my essay?

Your essay text is deleted from our database once your report is generated. We never sell your data or use your essay for advertising.

Is Statementory affiliated with Common App?

No. Statementory is an independent essay feedback tool and is not affiliated with Common App or any college.
