How long should a Common App essay be?

Updated October 16, 2026

The Common App personal essay must be at least 250 words and no more than 650. The application box will not accept more than 650 words, so the upper limit is hard.

Most applicants should use most of that space. 650 words is not much: about a page and a third, or four to six short paragraphs.

How much of the limit to use

There is no prize for writing exactly 650 words, but an essay far below the limit usually means a story that has not been developed: scenes summarized instead of shown, or reflection left out. If your draft is under 500 words, the question is not how to pad it but what is missing. Usually it is the part where you explain what the experience means to you.

When you are over 650

  1. 1Cut the setup. Most first drafts spend too long getting started; the first paragraph can often go entirely.
  2. 2Compress routine stretches. Weeks of practice can be one sentence; the moment that mattered deserves the detail.
  3. 3Remove sentences that repeat your activities list or your transcript.
  4. 4Cut throat-clearing phrases: "I have always been", "This experience taught me that", "In conclusion".
  5. 5Only then trim individual words.

Paste carefully

Write in a document, then paste into the Common App box and check the formatting. Word counters differ slightly in how they count hyphenated words and numbers, so leave yourself a few words of margin. Our free word counter shows where you stand against both limits.
