Prompt 5

Common App prompt 5: personal growth

Updated October 16, 2026

The prompt
“Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.”

Prompt 5 asks you to discuss an accomplishment, event or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. It is a natural fit for many stories, which is why it is one of the most popular prompts.

The phrase that matters is "a period of". Growth here is a process with steps, not a single moment where everything changed. Essays that skip from spark to transformation in one paragraph read as convenient.

What the prompt is really asking

How do you change? Readers want to see the person before, the event that started something, at least one step in between, and the person after. The new understanding should be specific enough that it could not be swapped into another applicant's essay.

What readers look for

  • One accomplishment, event or realization, shown as a moment rather than summarized.
  • How you saw yourself or others before.
  • Growth as a process over time, with at least one intermediate step.
  • A new understanding that is specific to you, not a lesson about comfort zones.
  • By the end, the reader knows how you think now.

Common traps

  • The instant transformation. One event, one realization, done.
  • "I learned to step outside my comfort zone", the most common ending in college essays.
  • An accomplishment essay in disguise: the growth is really just winning something.
  • No before. If the reader does not know who you were, they cannot see that you changed.

Questions that find the middle

  • What did you try first that did not work?
  • When did you notice you were thinking differently, and what made you notice?
  • What did someone else say or do during that period that you still remember?
  • What do you do now, on an ordinary day, that you would not have done before?
